News Highlights of the Week

The 'storm of the century' has just rolled across the continent of Khorvaire, quite literally burying villages under snow in Aundair, Thrane and Karrnath. The heads of state of all three nations have asked for disaster relief from anyone and everyone, and the Riedrans have been gracious enough to supply even more of their surplus grain than usual to support populations whose own harvests were wiped out during the two month long blizzard. Meanwhile, druids from the Eldeen Reaches have predicted an even worse storm sweeping in from the west in the next three months.

In Sharn, violence has broken out on the streets as rival gangs (including elements of Daask, the now-infamous Droaamite-backed crime syndicate) wage open war on each other. Captain Garlen of the City Watch had this to say: "The Boromars started this, I tell you...get those reporters out of here! That's off the record!" He was unavailable for further comment.

Rumors of disappearances have arrived from Aundair, apparently unrelated to the blizzards just now dispersing. Two villages in the northeast section of the country have been completely abandoned. Jacob Onasa, a farmer living nearby, had this to say after visiting one of the villages: "It was a raid, I tell ye! Old tools scattered everywhere, furniture upended inside houses, blood stains...how could a blizzard do all that? It was them stinkin' Karrns across the Sound, mark my words." The Royal Eyes have been deployed into the region, but they have offered no comment thus far.

And the Barrakas Summit planned for this year in Thronehold only has the open support of King Kaius III of Karrnath and Queen Aurala of Aundair thus far. Prince Oargev of New Cyre has made a public show of burning his own invitation, which he later told our reporters welcomed him as 'a regent of a fledgling nation'. The Droamites have been ignored once again, though the question of their sovereignty is apparently an issue open for discussion in this year's summit. House Orien and House Cannith also plan to send delegates to the summit to speak of rebuilding the White Arch Bridge across Scion's Sound between Thaliost and Rekkenmark. Besides reconnecting the eastern and western lightning rail lines, this would be a symbolic gesture of goodwill. Unfortunately, the decision rests largely with Karrnath and Thrane, who claim the land on either side of the ruins of the first White Arch Bridge. A representative of the Cardinal of Councils in Flamekeep, speaking on condition of anonymity, has said that it is 'unlikely' that the Council will approve of this reconstruction project even if they do send delegates to the Barrakas Summit. When asked why, the representative would only say that there were 'strategic concerns'.
